The 19th Century (1800-1899) and the Age of Romanticism

1. What is Romanticism? (It has many definitions, and is many things.)
Romanticism is a kind of thinking or movement starting from the second half of the 18th century. It is a style that can be found in art, music, and literature. It focuses on intuition, imagination, and feelings.

2. How does your subject fit into the world of Romanticism (their work, their life)
Claude Debussy lived in the Romanticism period. When I listen to his music I feel he put a lot of imagination and feelings in his music. I can imagine a picture when I listen to his music. For example, when I listen to one of his pieces called ?Clair de lune,? I think it is really romantic and peaceful.

3. Are there elements or aspects of your subject that are not romantic in nature?
Some people said Debussy?s music style is impressionism, but he said that he was trying to do something different and it shouldn?t be labeled as ?impressionism? or ?romanticism?.

1. What was "impressionism" in painting?
Impressionism in painting is include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light, ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience.

2. How did Debussy try to relate music to painting?
Debussy is trying to let people have a feeling about the a picture when they listen to music.

3. Do you believe he was successful? Why?
He become a famous composer, because when people listen to music people will have a special feeling and make people relax.
